About Us

In 1987, Terry Hirth Caldwell, owner of Bodywise Therapeutic massage, began her career as a massage therapist. In 1990, she went into massage therapy full-time.

Rather than work for someone else, Terry chose to open her own clinic. She felt it would allow her to run the business her way, allowing her to not only serve clients, but to create positive, long-lasting relationships with her patients. In her mind, the best massage clinic would be peaceful and therapeutic. With this idea in mind, Terry opened  Bodywise  in 1991.

Initially, Terry wanted to work exclusively with athletes suffering overuse injuries. She nearly became a consulting therapist with the Pistons, Detroit’s professional basketball team. However, right around that time, Terry started to notice a surprising trend.

Many clients who came  to the office were musicians, not athletes. Before long, Terry helped more and more musicians, who  had some of the same overuse injuries as athletes. Terry became impassioned about helping local musicians. She started studying body mechanics at recitals, and even taught a class,”The Musical Athlete,” at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.

Terry hired her first massage therapist in 1993. In 1994 she moved to a larger facility and hired three more therapists.

Terry joined the faculty at the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy. At the same time, she kept a focus on being an avid volunteer throughout the community. At the end of 1999, Bodywise moved into their current location. The office continues to serve the greater Ann Arbor area, and in 2010 won the AnnArbor.com therapeutic massage award.
